Diving Into the World of Dive Torches: How to Choose the Right One for You
When it comes to any activity that takes place underwater, the right equipment can make all the difference. One such item that can enhance both your safety and enjoyment during a dive is a dive torch. With so many different types of dive torches available, choosing the right one can be overwhelming. This guide will take you through the factors you should consider when selecting a dive torch to ensure you choose the one that best fits your needs.
Brightness and Beam Profile
One of the essential factors to consider when selecting a dive torch is its brightness. The primary purpose of a dive torch is to illuminate your surroundings, so you need to ensure that it can produce enough light to do so. Brightness is measured in lumens, and the required lumen count will depend on where you want to use the torch. The higher the lumen output the brighter the light will seem. BUT this is not the only factor you will want to consider the beam profile should be a large consideration. With dive torches, if you are wanting a general purposes light for normal dives you may want to consider something with an 8-degree – 20-degree light output, on the other end if you are looking for a dive torch to take video or photos you may not be looking for something so concentrated and maybe after a dive torch with a 90 – 180 degree light. We will talk more about these beam profiles in a later post.
Burn Time
Another crucial factor in selecting a dive torch is the burn time. The length of time a dive torch will illuminate varies greatly depending on the model and batteries. When determining the best burn time for you, consider the length of your planned dives and the amount of time you plan to use the torch. If a dive torch’s burn time is too short, it could leave you in the dark before you’re done using it. For example, you do not want to have to carry around a huge dive torch with a large battery back if you are only free diving or quick dives searching for crays it would just get in the way so you may only want something small with a couple hours run time. On the other end of the scale if you planning to head out for multiple hours you will need to think about run time and also possibly the idea of carrying a second or third light so you have a backup if something was to happen.
Size & Weight
The size and weight of a dive torch not only affect the ease of transportation and storage but also the comfort of use. bulky torches can be unwieldy underwater and can even through off your balance, making you unpredictable. A small, lightweight torch is ideal for all dive types as it won’t add bulk or weigh you down.
Battery Type
Dive torches come with various battery types – standard alkaline, rechargeable, and long-lasting battery options. The type of battery you choose will influence the overall cost of the torch and how portable it is. Alkaline batteries may be replaced easily, but they’re not suitable for extended use. Long-lasting batteries such as lithium-ion batteries are best for longer trips, and rechargeable batteries will save you money in the long run while saving the environment. Most if not all the good dive torches these days will use some sort of lithium battery setup with external battery chargers and for some dive torches internal battery chargers.
Additional Features
Some torches come equipped with additional features such as strobe lights, SOS signals, flashlights, and even a zoom function. If you plan to use a dive torch for specialised outings such as caves or wrecks, these additional features could elevate your diving experience. There are also underwater signal lights or glo-toobs as they are sometimes referred to are a good idea when diving with others or by yourself to be easily seen at a distance and in all directions.
A dive torch is an important essential tool for any diver. Careful consideration of crucial factors such as brightness, burn time, size and weight, battery type and additional features can make your dive more enjoyable and secure. Understanding the various variables in selecting a dive torch and knowing what specifications you require will ensure you choose the best dive torch for you to explore the underwater world safely and efficiently.
